What is Reiki?
Reiki originated in Atlantis but was rediscovered in Japan by Dr Mikao Usui in the early 1900s. Reiki is a system of utilizing the Universal Life Force to heal us in a natural way. There are many different systems of Reiki but the main Reiki energy is the same. Each type of Reiki just finely adjusts the energy being channelled so that specific things may be dealt with. The end result is always the same - that of feeling positive, relaxed and at peace with the world and yourself!

The word Reiki means Universal Life Energy and this form of healing is not attached to any belief system. Reiki is channeled through the Practitioner, not by the Practitioner, and may be either hands-on or hands-off healing, i.e. the Practitioner may work by putting their hands on the body or in the aura (electro-magnetic field) around the body.

Emotional difficulties, limiting beliefs, feelings about ourselves, or stress and tension in our lives are all registered in and affect the physical body as much as the mind, influencing our health and well-being.

Physical difficulties can teach us great lessons, and paying attention to our feelings when we experience pain or a physical feeling of ill health will lead us to a greater understanding of ourselves, and what has caused the physical problem.

To heal is to make whole. That is, for us to come into a wholeness of body, mind and soul. The purpose of Reiki is to give us a better understanding of who we really are, and to balance our energy systems therefore maintaining health and well being.

It will therefore bring to the surface any thing we have experienced in this or other lifetimes that is necessary for us to deal, with in order to move forward in this journey of life. Focusing purely on the physical will limit our healing potential.

What benefits will I get from having Reiki?
No matter the reason for you deciding to have Reiki, the general effect of treatments is to make you feel "more laid back", calmer and less stressed and therefore more able to cope. It'll boost your energy levels, raise your mood and make you feel more positive about things. Stressful situations will appear to wash over you as Reiki brings things back into balance!

How does Reiki work?
Reiki energy is channelled through the Reiki Practitioner to heal you during your treatment. The Reiki energy assists you in balancing your physical and energy bodies.

Reiki energy can not be directed by the healer and a good healer will always work intuitively. It is always used for your highest good.

The Reiki energy may be correcting imbalances in the auric layers (electromagnetic field) around your body, your chakras (energy centres), or it may be releasing your emotions previously locked into your cells. Ultimately this will then have a positive effect on your problem.

Reiki energy will always go to where it is most needed and will release your blocks in the correct order. It heals at all levels: physical, psychological, emotional, social and spiritual.

Will Reiki cure me?
Reiki heals you rather than cures you; what this means is this, it helps you to become whole and to have a better understanding of your true self. The effects of your Reiki treatments build up cumulatively over time.

What about long term illnesses or disabilities?
The Reiki Association has a very informative website where it makes the following comment:
"Acute injuries can be helped to heal very quickly but more chronic illness takes longer. In some cases such as terminal illness there is not enough time for the progress of the disease to be reversed. However, in such cases there is usually great benefit and enhancement to the quality of life giving a sense of peace and acceptance during the time remaining."

Is it OK to have Reiki when I am having medical treatment?
Reiki may be used in conjunction with medical treatment and other complementary therapies. Reiki will accelerate your healing process but please remember, it is not a replacement for orthodox medical treatment.

Please note that if you are taking regular medication your dosage may need to be adjusted after regular sessions of Reiki, as it may reduce your dependence on your medication. Please ensure you consult your medical doctor to review this.

If you have a pacemaker, please make me aware of this. As I am channelling energy, I will need to take this into account during your treatment.

Who may receive Reiki?
Adults or children may be given Reiki. It can also be used on animals, plants and situations.

How many sessions of Reiki will I need?
It will take a minimum of 6 treatments for you to really feel a difference. Subsequent sessions can then be agreed between us. Should you need more than 12 sessions you'll then be advised to do the Reiki 1 course so that you can learn to heal yourself.
